“I’d much rather hang out in a café. That’s where things are happening”

Things are really happening for this one! Get not just great food but great entertainment too.

The tourism and hospitality industry of Udaipur is a flourishing one with many restaurants and small picturesque cafes catering to the thousands of tourists that come to the city every year. But every now and then there crops up an odd café or eatery that tries to bring something new for the locals of the city. One such place is Mic & Munch (PAL’s Food Venture Ltd.), which brought the concept of open Mic nights with great Mexican food in the heart of the city. Mr. Aviral Munot was working in Mumbai in Info Edge and while visiting the city’s many cafes and restaurants, he got the idea to open a café in his hometown of Udaipur. He talked with his childhood friends, Mr. Lovish Sanadhya and Mr. Priyank Patel who were both pursuing CA Finals back then, but left to fulfill this dream of opening a café, and together they started Mic & Munch. It was the first café in the city to have an open stage with a Mic and Guitar, where customers could just come up and share their talents with others like singing, poetry or story-telling. They have also hosted professional live bands, music evenings, poetry competition and a food tasting event where they introduced their main course. Recently they organized a singing event in association with Radio city known as ‘City ka open Mic’ which drew a very positive response. They plan to organize more such events regularly on weekends. The details of all upcoming events can be found on their Facebook and Instagram pages.

Located in the city center at Court Circle, the one year old café cum restaurant has an inviting look which allows one to have a relaxed time. Apart from its open stage and great food, the café is famous for its perky interiors and the way the dishes are served. So when you order a beverage, you won’t get it in a normal tall glass but a quirky light-bulb glass. The interiors are inspired by big city pubs and are done very tastefully. The chairs are made from big tin containers and in the name of ceiling; they have a chalk-board. Yes, you read that right. They wanted their customers to have something to scribble on, so they gave away the whole ceiling for the purpose as well as a few tables. The ceiling is half filled with names of best friends and numerous declarations of love and the other half will be soon filled going by the fact that the café is frequented by locals and national tourists alike on a regular basis. It is famous with both the youth and families who have quite a good time with the mic and guitar.

As they bought the innovative concept of open Mic, they also wanted to experiment with the cuisine and serve something which was not normally served before in the cafes. Hence, they focused on Mexican cuisine. Mic & Munch specializes in Mexican cuisine with a local touch and have introduced the local populace to the dishes such as quesadilla and M&M Nachos. These dishes are quite liked by the Gujarat tourists that frequent the area. They also introduced their own ‘Modi Chai’ after Prime Minister Modi’s humble days as a tea seller were much publicized. This unique name is not limited to only ‘Modi Chai’, they also have ‘Apni Maggie’ and ‘Sabziyon ki mara-mari’ in their ‘Aam Admi ka Khana’ section, which is where their main course is listed. They also have chocolate pani-puri shots combining the sweet and spicy and pizza parantha which is quite popular. They are in the process of revamping their menu and soon would be introducing many new dishes such as Pizza Trilogy, which is a three layered pizza. This spirit of innovation and doing something better is seen throughout the café. They have numerous facilities for their customers like free Wi-Fi, books, board games and their open stage where anybody can come and perform. They also organize screening of live sports event like cricket and football world cups. They have facilities to organize big meetings and parties and have a capacity for 60 people and the entire café can be booked for an event or party with minimum number of 40 people required to do so. The staff is courteous and ever helpful and the owners personally cater to the customers, suggesting them their best dishes as well as getting their feedback. This way of customer engagement has proved fruitful for them as this helps them to understand their customers better and improve their services. They are very inspired by how cafes operate in big cities and want to replicate their management style to their cafe.

The owners had a dream of bringing something new to the city. Their concept of open mic and events was much appreciated by the local population and they continue to enjoy the first mover advantage. They are not afraid of the competition and want to adopt a collaborative approach, like the one seen in big cities where café owners help out each other in times of rush and are friendly towards each other. They plan to open franchise across India and probably one more café in Udaipur itself. The owners have a genuine passion for their work and a desire to serve its customers with something new and better every time. So, if you are looking for something new to try, then Mic & Munch is a refreshing breath of air.
